The Trade House of Lang

Freshly-backed pastries every morning

Located by Pekkatori Square, the Trade House of Lang offers stories and experiences from the age of sailing ships in Raahe. The Trade House is an enchanting café-restaurant, shop and inn from the 19th century, which also rents out space for celebrations and conferences. It continuous the traditions of a merchant house with more than two centuries of history, taking us back with tales of life and historical figures in days past. The Trade House of Lang serves fresh pastries and local food prepared in its own kitchen as well as wonderful accommodations in a unique and historical environment. At the café, you will catch the alluring smell of freshly-baked pastries every single morning! On weekdays, the kitchen also serves lunch and prepares delicious meals or amazing celebrations by order. We make everything we serve ourselves. Have a taste of something sweet or savoury in the café while enjoying the atmosphere. You can also hold festive private events at the Trade House.

Pick out treats and souvenirs to take home at the shop

The shelves of our shop are stacked with treasures from ships that have visited distant lands and the skilful works of local artisans. The shop’s selection has been put together to invoke the spirit of the cargo manifest of Lang’s sailing ship in the 1870s, and we import small batches of delectable treats and other products from the same ports as the ships of old!

Stay in the maid’s room or the captain’s cabin

The Bed & Breakfast services include accommodation in a unique room and a delicious breakfast. Our one-of-a-kind rooms provide a window into the life of the former residents of the Trade House of Lang. As an example, you can stay in the romantic lady Sofia’s room or the captain’s cabin. Book genuinely unique hotel-quality accommodations at the historical Trade House!

Hold a meeting in a historical environment with modern amenities

The conference services of the Trade House of Lang provide everything you need for an effective meeting in an inspiring environment, including modern AV technology. You can choose the content of the catering and keep the evening going with a dinner, for example. We also offer a diverse range of activities and services to ensure a memorable conference. We will be happy to provide more information!

Host a celebration to remember

Work with us to plan an unforgettable celebration! We will set everything up on our spectacular premises with a unique touch, enabling you to focus on the important day of celebrations. You can pick the catering content according to your preference based on the Trade House’s old recipe book, for example. We can seat 98 guests and are licensed to serve alcohol.

Life at the Trade House of Lang guided tour

The tour involves the lady, patron or maid of the house recounting the history of the Trade House and life within its walls in the 19th century. You can order coffee catering or a buffet lunch for the tour.

On the adventure trail, you can taste excitement by trying your hand at axe throwing, crossing a stream on a raft of backpacks, lighting a campfire, archery and rescue operations.

You will also get to glimpse inside an old pilot’s house built in 1906, which was used for guiding ships to the Raahe port and the open sea. Right next to it is one of the few surviving lightless lighthouses on the Finnish coast, which was built in 1852.

#TIP Experience the icy beauty of the Raahe archipelago

Feel the power of the sea, ice and wind in the midst of natural wonders and the Raahe archipelago, which has been shaped to its unique form by post-glacial rebound and early sources of livelihood. This cruise will take you to view the sparkling spring ice of the Bay of Bothnia, to the shallows of Klupu, Kiviperttu and Ulkoletto, where the late winter storms usually pack the ice into glistening peaks reaching the height of several men. Amid these landscapes you will be able to feel the marine nature deep inside you. The heart of the archipelago lies a mere 20 minutes from the centre of Raahe.

The cruise is available by order from the time the ice cover parts to mid-May. On the icy sea, you will leave your busy day-to-day life behind and enjoy a nice cup of coffee served by the captain and enjoy tales about the archipelago, and the sea and ice shimmering under the warm spring sun. In these ever-changing landscapes, you have a good chance of spotting a grey seal or white-tailed eagle. Some Baltic ringed seals have also been seen in the area, so bring your binoculars and camera with you.

Duration starting at 3 h
Group size 6–34 people
Includes cruise, guidance and coffee catering.
Price starting at €45/person.
Extra service e.g. meal and other catering on the boat or in the archipelago.

#TIP Life at the Trade House of Lang

The Trade House of Johan Lang was a long-standing influence on life in Raahe. The merchants and women of the Trade House, especially the ladies of the “Franzen era”, carved a lasting mark in the memory of Raahe and the entire region. Merchant Johan Lang had the Lower Mansion built in 1811, just after the fire of Raahe, for real estate business. There were two shops, a brewery, captain’s room, maid’s room and overnight facilities for peasants and merchants who arrived into town for business and stables for their horses.

You will hear the stories of the Trade House’s colourful history and life in Raahe in the 19th century, as told by the patron or patroness of the house. In conjunction with the guided tour, you will enjoy a tasty buffet lunch. The food is always made from fresh local ingredients in the Trade House’s own kitchen. As the cherry on top, you will get to pick a slice of cake from the  display cabinet. You may have some difficulty choosing, though, as they are each more divine than the next. Coffee is always served in wonderful rose-ornamented cups. In the Trade House Shop, you are sure to find the very best souvenirs to take home.

Duration starting at 30 min
Group size minimum 1 person
Price includes guidance and lunch buffet with cake and coffee for dessert
